FAQS (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. WHAT IS TAEKWONDO ?

Taekwondo is a form of martial art from Korea. The word “Tae” means to kick and smash with your legs, “kwon” to punch and block with your hands and “do” the way.

2. WHO CAN LEARN TAEKWONDO ?

Everyone can learn taekwondo, whether you’re young or old, weak or strong, male or female.

3. WHY SHOULD I LEARN TAEKWONDO ?

Taekwondo is a martial art. And many learn martial art for self defense. Ask yourself which you prefer: (a) to have self-defense skills and find yourself in a situation where they are not needed or (b) not have self-defense skills and find yourself in a situation where they are needed? Don’t you think the answer is (a)? Furthermore, Taekwondo not only benefits you with such skills but also with good health, body and mind.

4. IS TAEKWONDO FOR MY CHILD ?

Yes. Taekwondo teaches your child self-discipline. The conditioning exercises in Taekwondo can develop your child's muscles and mould them to become stronger (if they're weak), plus when children learn Taekwondo they meet other children their age, younger or older to exchange views with and make more friends. Taekwondo training will also boost your child's self-confidence, and motivate them to become better at what they do.

5. IS TAEKWONDO A MARTIAL ART OR SPORT ?

Taekwondo is both. Taekwondo is a martial art, and it has been recognized as an international sport. Taekwondo made it’s debut as a demonstration sport in the 1998 and also 1992 Olympic Games, and became a full medal sport at the Sydney Olympics 2000.

6. DO I HAVE TO LEARN KOREAN LANGUAGE TO LEARN TAEKWONDO ?

Not necessary. In Malaysia we teach Taekwondo in mostly English or Bahasa Malaysia. But it doesn’t hurt to know the Korean terms as it will be much useful if you plan to learn intensive tkd in Korea. Then again, wouldn’t it be wonderful to know many languages.

7. WHERE CAN I LEARN TAEKWONDO ?

Check your area for tkd classes. If you’re in Malacca, come join TTSC. For more information, email us. Be sure that it’s WTF Taekwondo.

8. WHAT’S WTF AND ITF TAEKWONDO ?

WTF stands for World Taekwondo Federation and ITF stands for International Taekwondo Federation. Both are representatives of Taekwondo. But only WTF is sanctioned by the South Korean government and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), therefore, WTF is the “true” representative of Taekwondo. Furthermore, in Malaysia, to entitle you to compete in the MSSM and various national levels, you are required to be a member of any organization affiliated to the MTA (which is affiliated to WTF).

9. TAEKWONDO USES LEGS A LOT. HOW ABOUT HANDS ?

That’s why you have to come and learn Taekwondo yourself. It is true that tkd emphasizes on kicking skills, but it is not true that Taekwondo doesn’t practice on the hands. Because people use their hands for many tasks and their legs just for walking, they generally have better or more hand co-ordination than the foot-coordination. When you’re a beginner (a white belt) you are first taught the hand basics before going to the stances and kicking skills. Once you develop to higher standards, you are taught more kicking skills and hand techniques; to be used in defending and attacking. As you advance more and develop better kicking skills, you are taught to integrate other techniques (hand, elbow etc) along with your highly developed kicks for self defense purposes etc. In Taekwondo it is important to have balance, such, also applies to the skills of hands and legs.

10. ONCE I AM A BLACKBELT, MUST I ALSO BE AN INSTRUCTOR ?

No. Whether you're a Blackbelt or Poom, doesn't mean that you must become an instructor and start to teach classes. To become an assistant Instructor or Instructor, a Blackbelt will be selected by the Head Instructor and undergo the necessary training.

However, as a Blackbelt or Poom, it is your duty to help guide your juniors to develop better skills and become a better Taekwondoist and person. It is your oath and you must understand that to maintain and become a competent Blackbelt is no easy task. As such, you must equip yourself with all these knowledge to maintain your standard and integrity as a Blackbelt or Poom. Therefore, it is necessary for a Blackbelt or Poom to learn how to instruct and manage a class – as apart of training, besides leaning more advanced skills for the betterment of his/herself.
